History of the Goshin Dai Ryu

The Goshin Lineage

Goshin Dai Ryu was founded by Robert E. Fields, Jr. on September 23, 1997.

Soke Fields received training under several masters within the Goshin Jutsu Kyo Jujo system, including the late Grandmaster Gerard Durant founder of the Goshin Jutsu Kyo Jujo system. The late Grandmaster Gerard Durant, Soke, 10th Degree Red Belt, founded the Goshin Jutus Kyo Jujo System in 1974.

In the following years, before his death from cancer in 1991, Grandmaster G. Durant passed on his teachings and control of Aikijutsu no Goshinjutsu Ryu and Jujutsu no Goshinjutsu Ryu to Headmaster Richard Knapil and to hold the rank of Eighth Dan of the Goshin Jutsu Kyo Jujo system.

Headmaster Richard Knapil retired in 1995, and passed on the teachings and control of Aikijutsu no Goshinjutsu Ryu and Jujutsu no Goshinjutsu Ryu to 7th Degree Black Belt Master Robert E. Fields, Jr., a faithful student of the late Grandmaster Gerard Durant since the early 1970s.

Headmaster Fields received his first Black Belt ranking with the Midwest Jiu Jitsu Assoc., and then began his training in the Goshin Jutsu Kyo Jujo system under Grandmaster Gerard Durant. Headmaster Fields also served at that time as National Secretary for the Aikijutsu no Goshinjutsu Ryu and Jujutsu no Goshinjutsu Ryu.

Headmaster Fields served as advisor of Aikijutsu on the Board of Advisors for the Goshin Jutsu International, and also Northeast representative of the Goshin Jutsu International.

Headmaster Fields received recognition for the Cleveland City Karate Championships 1992 from Daniel Soward, founder of the International Karate Hall of Fame.

Soke Fields also received an Honorary 7th Degree Black Belt with the Universal Tae Kwon Do Brotherhood (U.T.B.) from Prof. Eugene A. Humesky, Ph.D., Grandmaster 9th Dan U.T.B.-U.M.A.B. Organization.

Soke Fields has been inducted into the World Head of Family Sokeship Council International Hall of Fame on September 2, 2000, as Millenium Instructor, awarded by Soke Frank E. Sanchez.  In 2003, Soke Fields was nominated for the Grandmaster of the Year Award.

In order to pass on the teachings of the late Grandmaster Gerard Durant with a base in the Greater Cleveland, Ohio area and tri-state area, Soke Fields has founded the Goshin Dai Ryu and the Goshin Martial Arts Organization. Not to compete with the existing branches of the Goshin Jutsu systems that still can be found throughout Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

Soke Fields is a strong believer of cross training and still keeping the traditional training and values of the Goshin Jutsu system as with the the original system of the Goshin Jutsu Kyo Jujo.

Soke Fields has incorporated basic Boxing techniques and skills into this fighting system. The systems of the Goshin Dai Ryu are:

Goshin Dai Ryu - Aikijutsu
Gohsin Dai Ryu - Ju Jutsu
Goshin Dai Ryu - Karate Do
Goshin Dai Ryu - Kobudo
Goshin Dai Ryu - Boxing

Goshin - Self Defense

Dai - Ultimate
